Day 5/366 : Laugh, But …

Dear reader, another translated poem for you today. The poet is Nirendranath Chakravarty – a contemporary Bengali poet from India. He is one of my favorite poets, and today I am translating the poem ‘যতই হাসুন’ (Jotoi Hashun) under the translated title ‘Laugh, But …’.

Laugh, But …

Nirendranath Chakravarty

Translation: Mushfiqua Fatima

Keeping eyes on the night sky

Walking on the road

The man who slipped into the pothole…

Listening this story of his dumbness

Laugh as much you can,

But, don’t say ‘bravo’

To that smart man too,

Who can walk the road

Avoiding the potholes, and obstacles

But has forgotten to look up at the stars

Those  adorn the night sky.

Van Gogh starry night
